چکیده

This vapidity with which Castellani and Chalmers Tropical Medicine established itself as the standard book on the subject is remarkable and is a tribute to the thoroughness with which the book was written. Only a couple of years ago it appeared and here is a second and fully revised edition bigg^v than ever. Indeed its very bulk will necessitate its publication in another edition in two volumes. We formed a very high opinion of the first edition and must say the same of the second. It is a wonderful compilation and compendium of what is known on tropical diseases; we can only pity the student who has to pass an examination on the subject if he is expected to have an acquaintance with all that is here given on this subject. As before the volume is divided into three parts, the first part is certainly interesting and deals with the history of tropical medicine, climatology, the tropical races, effects of food and climate on man i? ^ie tropics (in which the work of Major D. McCay, l M.S., is freely made use of), the effects of temperature and humidity, and a brief note on the geographical distribution of disease. This first part is certainly valuable, and the authors have collected a mass of facts and figures not easily obtainable elsewhere. Part II begins with the causation of disease, the effects of high atmospheric temperature, and "some tropical traumatisms/' which include tiger bites, crocodile and alligator bites, shark bites, footbinding in China and injuries from electric fans. Under the heading " Chemical cause of

This manual is frankly elementary, but the ninth edition has been largely rewritten, especially in the sections devoted to dysentery, dengue, sleeping sickness, beri-beri, Malta fever, plague?to mention only the tropical diseases. The information given is accurate and up-todate and clearly expressed. The volume is elegantly got up, well p...
